Get Jen Aniston, Taylor Swift and Megan Fox's Liner Looks! - Parade Magazine

What beauty topic does celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman get the most questions about? Liners! Whether they're brow liners, eye liners, or lip liners, women want to know the tricks to get their look just right. Here are some great hints from Brett to make sure you're using your lining tools to the best of their ability.

default-lip linerLIP LINER - Even though we're seeing a lot of deeper lip shades for the upcoming season, a soft and casual daytime look, a la Jennifer Aniston, is always in vogue. Jen's unstructured nude lip liner topped with a great gloss looks dewy and fresh.

Here's how to get Jen's look:
*Prep lips with a satin finish lip balm but don't use anything too waxy or greasy!
* Fill in the entire mouth lightly with a warm, nude, peach or pink lip pencil. Try a shade or two darker than your skin tone. The outside line should be the same light shade as the fill-in on the rest of the lips. Pad your finger over lip line to diffuse color a bit.
*Apply a shimmery apricot or soft pink gloss shade to moisten the lip. Voila - the perfect inconspicuous lined lip!
default-eye linerEYE LINER - Theatrical winged out liquid liner is becoming popular with celebs like singing sensation Taylor Swift and reality TV starlet Lauren Conrad. The look feels very modern, yet has roots in vintage Hollywood.

Here's how to get Taylor and Lauren's look: *Start by sweeping a nude matte eye shadow over the entire lid. This gives the eye a smooth surface to create the swept-out liner look.
*Choose a solid black liquid liner for the most impact. Beginning on the outer corner of the eye, go very close to the lash line and dot and dash from tear duct to outer corner. Start very thin and close to the lash line for the crispest results (fatten up the line later for more drama). Once the natural lash line is defined, finish by extending the outer corner out and up toward the temple.
*For best results, jut your chin out to open up your lid/lash line and keep chin jutted out until the liner is dry, about a minute.
default-brow linerBROW LINER - Bold is in for brows! Fuller brows make a statement and are all the rage. But even if you weren't born with big, full brows, you can add impact to your arches with a structured, dramatic brow line like Megan Fox.

Here's how to get Megan's look:
*Begin by shaping brows very crisply. Pluck away any hairs that are clearly out of place and focus on the area in-between eyes. It's very important to have a tidy brow for this dramatic look or else the fill-in can look messy and unnatural.
*Fill in the brows behind the hairs with a brow pencil that matches your eyebrows. To amp up the arch and shape, fill in just above the brow from front to tail. This thickens the brow and gives a touch of lift.
*Use a small spoolie brush or clean mascara wand to blend and refine the pencil.
*Once your fill-in is complete, take a touch of brow gel and brush hairs up and out.

Best and Worst of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards: Chelsea Handler, Taylor Swift, Kanye West - HitFix

music Published on Monday, Sep 13, 2010 6:33 AM

Worst: Chelsea Handler

It pains me to say it, but Chelsea Handler was in over her head with hosting duties. The stage was just too big for her and the audience too distant. She boringly oscillated between jokes about sleeping with rappers and jokes about partying hard, sometimes with a dash of absurdist bad behavior (like trying to steal Justin Bieber's "wig").

Handler seemed handcuffed by tactless writing, some jokes so flat you could see the disappointment creep across her face as the monitors rolled. These include mostly cringe-worthy swipes at women, almost all women -- from Taylor Swift's purity image to Mariah Carey's age. Naturally, when your subjects are limited to Ke$ha's dumb name, professional trainwreck Lindsay Lohan and the brain-suck that is "Jersey Shore," things are gonna be a little rough. I just didn't think it could be this rough.

And, yes, that's Handler riding Rick Ross, riding a motorized cart.

Yahoo opens its 'chicken coop' green data center

Yahoo’s newest data center, a 155,000-square-foot facility in upstate New York, uses 40 percent less energy and 95 percent less water than conventional facilities.

The energy-efficient data center has a variety of unique traits. It gets almost all of its cooling from outdoor air, giving it a power usage effectiveness rating of 1.08, which is significantly below the industry average of 1.92. The data center, which is capable of holding 50,000 servers, has been designed like a chicken coop: the long, narrow buildings make it easier to circulate in outdoor air. The building itself is also positioned to take advantage of the prevailing winds.

Dubbed the Yahoo Computing Coop (YCC), the facility doesn’t contain any chillers. “It’s a passively cooled facility, much like you’d find in chicken coops,” explains Christina Page, director of climate and energy strategy at Yahoo. “It’s designed to maximize the pass of airflow. This is how we cooled buildings before we used the mechanical brute force of chillers.”

The data center will run Yahoo services like Mail, Messenger and Flickr.

The data center is touted to use 40 percent less electricity than typical data centers and will only spend one percent of its energy bill on cooling. Yahoo is currently seeking a patent for its Chicken Coop design that it could use as a model when building future data centers. The company, which has been looking to reinvent itself in the wake of Google’s rise, clearly has not lost its innovative roots.

The U.S. Department of Energy gave Yahoo a $9.9 million grant toward the cost of the facility. The DOE wants to encourage better energy practices in data centers, which account for a growing proportion of U.S. energy use.

Yahoo Is Pretty Much Worthless, In Wall Street's Opinion

carol bartz yahoo jerry yang

Image: AP

With Yahoo's shares trading just over $14, investors are telling the world that its core business is worthless, says Aaron Kessler of ThinkEquity.

Kessler did a sum-of-the-parts analysis of Yahoo, and estimated that Yahoo's assets are worth $15.29 per share in total. If you discount 30% to factor in tax implications from selling, Yahoo's assets are worth $9.50 per share (not counting cash).

In other words, if you stripped out the strategic investments and just looked at Yahoo's core business, it's only worth $4 or less, says Wall Street.

Here's the breakdown via Eric Savitz at Barron's:

Yahoo! Japan: The company owns a 34.9% stake; on an undiscounted basis, he calculates, the stake is worth $4.88 a share. Alibaba.com: Yahoo has a 29% stake, worth $2.10 a share on an undiscounted basis. Alibaba Group: Yahoo has a 40% stake, which he estimates is worth $5.61 a share. The company has $2.70 a share in cash.

Selena Gomez And ;Taylor Swift Form Mutual Admiration Society:

"It was so funny, I got to see her and we played each other both of our records, and I was so excited. I'm so excited for her record 'cause it's amazing. But then she heard mine and it's so funny 'cause she's very passionate and she's very dramatic — which I think is why we're friends because we're both dramatic — but she has her favorites already. She likes 'Rock God and 'Ghost of You' a lot. But she definitely danced and had her little thing. She's completely honest with me, so it was nice to have her feedback."
-Teenage pop star Selena Gomez discussing her new album and her relationship with pal Taylor Swift. Each of the pair has a new album hitting stores soon — Gomez's A Year Without Rain drops on Tuesday (September 21) and Swift's Speak Now streets October 25. Swift weighed in on Gomez's album, and Selena has plenty of favorites from Swift's forthcoming project as well. "My favorite songs from her record would be 'Dear John' and another one ... it's number 13 on the record 'cause that's her favorite number ... it's really sweet," she told MTV News. "There's two that I'm absolutely in love with."
While Gomez is excited over her new album (which has already caused a stir with the two singles "Round & Round" and "A Year Without Rain"), she is also eager for people to hear Swift's new tunes. "Her album is going to be awesome. I think people are gonna be really surprised. It's not different [but] you just don't really believe she could top it, in a way," she explained. "She took her style and made it bigger. It's going to be really good."

VMAs 2010: Taylor Swift Dissed Kanye West in New Song - Softpedia

Reports say Taylor Swift refused to do a duet with Kanye West for the 2010 Video Music Awards, and chose instead to perform a song she’d written with him in mind. MTV executives were not at all happy with her decision.

As some of you may remember, a year ago, Kanye rushed to the stage as Taylor was accepting her award for Best Female Video, took the mic from her hand and told the crowd that she didn’t deserve to win.

Because of his rude gesture and because Taylor happens to be ever so popular, Kanye took a lot of heat in the media, which forced him to lay low for about an entire year.

Rumors said VMA producers had convinced him to duet with Taylor on the night of the awards, thus bury the hatchet for good, while also getting lots of media for it.

Instead, Taylor took to the stage, alone, barefoot and standing in what looked like a derelict house, and sang about someone who’s 32 and still growing up, and who’s not what he’s done.

Producers were not at all happy with the singer’s choice, because it was a direct diss to Kanye, Ted Casablanca of E! Online’s The Awful Truth writes.

“Certain MTV execs were not pleased with Ms. Swift’s performance – or lack-there-of, as it might be. Not only did her appearance leave some viewers scratching their heads, but Tay also shied away from a proposed duet between the two superstars,” Casablanca writes.

“Trust us, folks in the Nokia Theatre, where the VMAs were held, were just as confused listening to T.Swift – wandering around her bizarre broken down home set sans shoes and singing a little ditty that everyone knew was addressed to the Kanye – as we’re sure you viewers at home were,” the columnist goes on to say.

Though the message of the song is a positive one, the ending also coming with a sunrise (symbolic of new beginnings), the way it was rendered was simply too much for a singer who’s known for being rather “normal,” for lack of a better term.

“The whole performance was over-the-top melodramatic – Taylor’s signature style, natch – for an incident that, in retrospect, really wasn’t a big deal. And from a gal who is supposedly totally over the whole ordeal, no less,” Casablanca points out.

The fact that she had last year’s scene / interruption play in grainy images before her new song started only added to the melodramatic moment – and didn’t score Taylor any points with the same executives, the report further says.

Then again, there are also those who say Taylor is only singing about forgiveness and how everybody makes serious mistakes at some point in their life. The rest is just what people WANT to see in her new song.

Here is Taylor Swift’s performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards. Judge for yourself.

The best seller for the week was Sara Bareilles' "Kaleidoscope Heart," which tallied 89,500 units sold, Billboard said. Eminem's "Recovery" moved 81,000 to rank second.

Total album sales for the week were 4.83 million, the lowest weekly figure since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, Billboard said. The previous low was 4.95 million, set only a month ago.

Locals to mark 'Misfits' at 50

Toni Westbrook-VanCleave was only 6 at the time, but she still remembers Marilyn Monroe strapping on a toy gun belt and playing cowboys and Indians with her brother during a break in filming of "The Misfits" in the then-small town of Dayton, Nev. VanCleave was a $10-a-day extra during a rodeo scene.

In testimony to the public's enduring fascination with Monroe, VanCleave and other locals will gather Saturday and Sunday in Dayton, about 40 miles southeast of Reno, to mark the 50th anniversary of filming for the last complete movie for both Monroe and Clark Gable.

The celebration will include a Monroe and Gable look-alike contest, a display of photographs of the stars taken in Dayton, a session of old-timers' reminiscences about the filming, and tours of the old bar where a light-hearted scene was shot of Monroe playing paddleball to the delight of male patrons.

Yahoo opening buoys hopes for attracting more

Yahoo formally opened its state-of-the-art data center in Lockport on Monday, in what company executives and local economic development officials say will be the first of several high-technology companies to locate sophisticated facilities in Western New York.

Carol Bartz, the Internet giant's CEO, joined Gov. David A. Paterson, Sen. Charles E. Schumer and a host of other state and local politicians in unveiling the new "server farm" at the Town of Lockport Industrial Park.

The project highlights the Sunnyvale, Calif., company's first use of a new environmentally friendly design that relies in large part on Western New York's cooler climate and the availability of low-cost hydropower to conserve energy and save on electricity costs.

"We're thrilled to unveil our world-class data center in Lockport and take an active role in the community," Bartz said. "Yahoo is serious about sustainability and is leading efforts to address climate change. That's why we believe in creating highly efficient data centers that minimize the impact on the environment."

With about 50,000 computer servers, the new facility will be the company's East Coast data center, powering Yahoo's network of sites that includes its e-mail and instant messenger service and Flickr. It began operations quietly several weeks ago, hosting the e-mail accounts for Yahoo customers on the East Coast.

The facility opened just 13 months after breaking ground in a muddy field in August 2009. Now that the central facility is open, company officials said, they can add more buildings in as little as six months.

The $150 million data center created up to 500 jobs during construction and will have at least 125 full-time employees -- 100 are already in place at the 155,000 square-foot site. But officials said they hope it will be the start of an even larger presence by Yahoo in Western New York.

"On every angle, what we've done in our project thus far is just a seed, almost a test to a certain extent," Scott Noteboom, Yahoo's vice president of data center operations and engineering, said in an interview. "Buffalo isn't just about a data center. We would like to spread our functions in more areas like Buffalo."

The second phase of Yahoo's project isn't even completed -- construction started in June and is slated to wrap up by December -- and local economic development officials are already seeing interest from other large technology-oriented firms.

"This project has put everything on the map and generated all the interest in the region," said Paul Pfeiffer, spokesman for the Buffalo Niagara Enterprise economic development organization.

"There are a number of high-technology, well-known companies that are interested in Western New York," said Richard M. Kessel, president and CEO of the State Power Authority. "It's low-cost power that will make it or break it. We will do whatever we can to do that."

In particular, sources said on condition of anonymity, local officials are courting a much larger data center project for Verizon Communications that would dwarf Yahoo's in size and scale. The New York-based telecommunications giant is considering Western New York along with two other states.

Sources said Verizon is considering property owned by energy firm AES Corp. in the Town of Somerset in northeastern Niagara County, immediately adjacent to the AES power plant, as well as in the nearby Town of Shelby in Orleans County. A decision is expected by year's end. Other companies have also indicated interest in Western New York, including Twitter, but Verizon is much further along in the process, the sources said.

"Having an international company of Yahoo's caliber establish a presence in Lockport opens the door to enormous possibility in locating other high-tech companies to Western New York," Paterson said, without being specific.

Meanwhile, Yahoo and Power Authority officials confirmed they have begun negotiations about getting additional low-cost hydropower to support an expansion of the project beyond what was already envisioned. The project was originally granted 15 megawatts of low-cost power by the Power Authority as one of the critical inducements to lure Yahoo here.

"We are currently under discussion with [the Power Authority] to further expand Yahoo's footprint in this location," said Yahoo Executive Vice President David Dibble, citing the possibility of "greater diversity of jobs" as well.

Data centers are hard to move once they are established and are difficult to put offshore, since they have to be within a 1,500-mile radius of the "end-users." So "when we build a data center, it's in our interest to continue to grow there," he said. Internally dubbed the "Yahoo Chicken Coop," the long, narrow design mimics a chicken coop to encourage natural air flow, using free cooling more than 99 percent of the time, so that less than 1 percent of a building's energy consumption is used to cool it.

Instead, it uses a combination of the area's cooler climate, prevailing winds from Lake Ontario and low-cost hydropower to keep the 120-foot-by-60-foot server buildings cool. That significantly reduces electricity use, so its power usage rating is about half that of the industry average.

Specifically, the company said, the data center will use at least 40 percent less energy and at least 95 percent less water than conventional facilities.

It also does not require wastewater treatment for its cooling system, while similar-sized centers result in more than 5 million gallons of wastewater. "This building here sets the standard by which data centers the world over are being measured," Dibble said.

In recognition, the company received a $9.9 million sustainability grant from the U.S. Department of Energy -- the largest award provided under the government's Green IT grant program.

Operationally, the facility includes the primary data center, as well as one of the company's global services desks, which provide technical help to Yahoo employees around the world.

Perhaps most significantly, it also includes one of the company's two global operations centers, which monitor the international network of Web sites and services to ensure they are up and running 24 hours a day. That operation had been in Bangalore, India, but the company closed it to bring the work to Western New York.
